Young Leadership, Big Responsibility
Austin recalls how, just after being sworn in at 26, he became not only Menasha’s youngest mayor but also the city’s first Native American mayor. His journey—rooted in community service, student government, and a passion for public good—reminds us that leadership comes from listening, learning, and stepping up when it matters. As Austin puts it, “If I’m not willing to be the change I want to see in the world, why do I expect others to do that?”
Why Local Government Matters
Mayor Hammond dives into the real-life impact of local government—everything from plowed streets to parks, clean waterways to fiscal responsibility. These “essential services” are what keep Menasha running strong. Austin shares the daily challenges of modern governance, especially with tight budgets and the need for smart, sustainable choices: “How do you do more with less, when more is expected of you, but you have less coming in?”
Championing Civic Engagement & Youth Participation
A key theme: inspiring the next generation. Austin addresses the myth that Millennials and Gen Z aren’t engaged, affirming, “They do care about the future of our nation…I really, in my heart of hearts, believe that.” He also reflects on the influence of leaders like JFK—whose legacy of hope and civic duty guides his own commitment to public service.
Rooted in Heritage, Building for the Future
Proudly representing the Brothertown Indian Nation, Mayor Hammond believes his Native American heritage deepens his responsibility to environmental stewardship and community inclusivity. Under his leadership, Menasha strives to “build longer tables with more seats,” inviting everyone to shape the city’s future.
A Place to Call Home
For those new to Menasha, Austin’s pitch is pure pride: “If you’re looking for a place with an abundance of access to waterfront, I’d encourage you to check out our beautiful parks, our vibrant downtown, and our unique Bridge Tower Museum—the smallest in Wisconsin, maybe even the U.S.!”
